CRANBERRIES: NEW ENGLAND’S BOUNTY
Native Americans introduced European settlers to cranberries near what is now Plymouth. They used the versatile fruit for food, dye and medicine. The settlers learned to harvest wild cranberries and came to rely on them for nutrients and for bartering with their Native American neighbors. This presentation on “cranberries” by author Anthony Sammarco will be held at the senior center on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. Anthony will give us an insight into this incredible fruit that by the late 18th century were used to cure scurvy, and by the 20th century cranberries were big business from juice as well as sauce, and would become inseparable from turkey at Thanksgiving. Sign up in advance and we’ll save you a seat.
SAFE DRIVING COURSE
The AARP will be offering a Safe Driving Course at the senior center on Wednesday, Oct. 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. This course will provide a review of driving skills and techniques, as well as strategies and tips to help you adjust to normal age-related changes that may affect your driving ability. The primary goals of this course is to help reduce your likelihood of getting into a motor vehicle collision. The cost is $20 per person and must be paid when you register for the course.
UKULELE CLASSES – MIXED LEVEL
Join us for an 8-week program of Ukulele Classes at the senior center on the following 8 Tuesdays from 2 to 3 p.m.: Oct. 11,18, 25, Nov. 8, 15, 22, 29 & Dec. 13. Participants should have some experience, and should have completed the beginner ukulele class (but it is not required). The cost is $75 per person and must be paid at the time you sign up. Don’t miss out on the fun!
SAVE THE DATE – HOLIDAY CRAFT FAIR
Are you a crafter and would you like to sell your treasures at our upcoming Holiday Craft Fair? If you’re interested, pick up an application at the front desk of the senior center. The fair will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the cost is $10 for a table to display your items for sale.
PSYCHIC MEDIUM DR. CATHY RIPLEY GREENE
Psychic Medium, Dr. Cathy Ripley Greene, will be back at the senior center once again on Wednesday, Oct. 19 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Cathy’s mission, and her gift, is to help others find clarity and inspiration through their connection to spirit. If you’ve always wondered, now is the time to join our group session. The cost is $20 per person, and a limited number of tickets are currently on sale at the senior center.

From October 3rd through the 14th, all punch card eligible programs at the senior center will be free of charge for everyone. We hope you will all take a chance and try a new program to stay active before our winter season begins! So stop by and try something new.
CULTURAL DANCE
Starting in October, join Foxborough resident, Garmai “Mai” Sumo on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. as she teaches us dances from her native country of Liberia. Mai will provide a fun atmosphere to experience and learn new dance moves while exercising. The cost is $3 per class and this program is Punch Card eligible.

NEWPORT CHRISTMAS TRIP
Join us on Thursday, Dec. 8 for a festive and fun-filled day trip to Newport, RI. We will be traveling by motorcoach and leaving Foxborough at 8:30 a.m. from the side parking lot of St. Mary’s Church at 58 Carpenter Street. We will begin the day with a morning tour of the “Breakers” mansion. The holiday décor is sure to impress and put you in the Christmas spirit. Following our tour, we will have lunch at the Atlantic Resort. For lunch, you have a meal choice of Baked Stuffed Scrod or Chicken Piccata. After lunch, we are back to the mansions for a tour of the beautiful Marble House. Following this visit we will be back on the bus and head to the Festival of Lights at the LaSalette Shrine before heading back to Foxborough. The cost is $121 per person for Foxborough residents and $126 for non-residents. Sign-up for Foxborough residents with payment will begin on September 29, and sign-up for nonresidents with payment will begin on Oct. 13.
SIGN UP FOR A TRIP TO ITALY IN APRIL 2023
The Foxborough Council on Aging & Human Services is planning a trip to Italy, specifically Rome and the Amalfi Coast, on April 9 through 18, 2023. Some of the highlights of our trip will include a walking tour of Classical Rome featuring a visit to the Colosseum, visiting the seaside resort of Sorrento, discovering the excavated ruins of Pompeii, sampling local specialties at a limoncello factory in Minori and enjoying a wine tasting and lunch at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius. The cost is $4,443 per person for a double and $5,243 for a single, with the opportunity to purchase optional tours. Sign up for Foxborough residents has begun, and sign up for non-residents will begin on Sept. 15. Trip flyers are available at the senior center or can be emailed to you upon request.
MEN’S BBQ
We are headed back outside for our fun Men’s BBQ on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. For September’s Men’s BBQ we will be serving steak trips for dinner. Guys are encouraged to come hungry for a great meal! The cost is $3 per person. Please be sure to sign up in advance with your payment.
HAIR STYLING
Would you like to get your hair cut and styled in the comfort of the Foxborough Senior Center? Starting Friday, Sept. 23, hair stylist Laurie Nicklas will be at the senior center from 10 a.m. to noon on the 4th Friday of each month to style hair. The cost per person is $15 for men and women. Sign up with your payment in advance to schedule an appointment.
SINGO
Enjoy SINGO, the musical version of the popular game of Bingo! Join us on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 3:15 p.m. for this themed activity which is being hosted by Jim the DJ Guy. Everyone who attends will be sure to have a great time. Snacks will be provided and prizes will be given out to the winners. Be sure to sign up!
LOW VISION SUPPORT GROUP
The Low Vision Support Group will be meeting on Thursday, Sept. 15, 1 to 2 p.m. This adult group provides peer support and information for anyone with vision loss or those who have concerns about their vision. SCAMS & FRAUD SERIES
Starting Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 1:30 p.m. and continuing on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, the AARP series “Scams and Fraud” will be held at the senior center. This 3-part series will focus on identifying and protecting yourself from scams 1) in emails, 2) on the phone, and 3) on the internet. Each meeting will include a follow-up discussion. ROME’S SUNKEN SECRETS
Join us on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. to see an episode of the new National Geographic series “Rome’s Sunken Secrets” This program follows archaeologists on the front line as they unearth Roman treasures across the world. In this episode, archaeologists find traces of a sea-battle that transformed Ancient Rome. Sign up if you’d like to join us.
FARMER’S MARKET COUPONS
A limited number of Farmer’s Market Coupons will be available for Foxboro senior citizens again this year. Each participant will receive $25 worth of coupons to spend at local Farmer’s Markets. In order to qualify you must be at least 60 years of age or disabled and living in a housing facility primarily occupied by older individuals where congregate nutrition services are provided. You must be a resident of Foxboro and have an income level at or below $25,142 for an individual or $33,874 for a couple. At the time the coupons are picked up, all participants must sign the self-declaration agreement that you meet the eligibility requirements.
LOW COUNTRY MEET & GREET
In preparation for our October trip to Charleston, Savannah and Jekyl Island, we will be hosting a meet and greet for our travelers at the senior center on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. Enjoy some Carolina/Georgia pulled pork while you meet new friends. Sign up in advance to let us know if you’ll be joining us.
LEFT, RIGHT, CENTER
Left, Right, Center, or LRC, is a simple, yet very fun game. There is no skill needed to enjoy playing and it’s an opportunity to meet new friends. If you have never heard of this game, it is VERY easy to play. Join us starting Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 1:15 p.m., and continuing monthly every 2nd Wednesday at 1:15. Please sign up in advance.
FISH AND GAME COOKOUT
The Fish and Game Club at 17 Neponset Heights Ave. in Foxboro will once again host their Senior BBQ on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thanks to the generosity of the Fish and Game Club, this fun event is free. The menu will include salad, pasta, BBQ chicken, veggies, watermelon and 2 alcohol drink tickets. Enjoy the water view, eat delicious food and have a great time with your friends. You must sign up through the senior center in advance if you are planning to attend.
REFLEXOLOGY
On Friday, Sept. 16, and on the 3rd Friday of each month, the senior center is offering reflexology appointments from 9 a.m. to noon. Reflexology is based on stimulating specific points on the feet that correspond to other areas and organs of the body. Reflexology is used to restore the body’s natural equilibrium by improving circulation and reducing tension. This relaxing and rejuvenating experience will involve aromatherapy infused reflexology. The cost $41 per half hour appointment. Sign up with your payment to schedule an appointment.
LUNCHEON OUTING
Our next luncheon outing will be on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at The House of Fortune in Plainville at 1 p.m. Call us to sign up by Monday, Sept. 19 and meet us at the restaurant on the 21st. For those who require van transportation, arrangements must be made by Monday the 19th.
SENIOR SUPPER
Our monthly Senior Supper program focuses on a unique high quality catered meal. We hope you’ll join us for an evening out with friends on Wednesday, Sept. 28. This program will start at 4 p.m. and food will be served around 4:30. September’s meal will be Chicken Broccoli & Ziti with Pesto Vegetables and Caesar Salad. This cost is $5 and must be paid at the time you sign up.
HEARING HEALTH
On Wednesdays, Sept. 14, 21 & 28 there will be Hearing Clinics offered from 1 to 3 p.m. This program is free and provides a hearing screening, ear wax removal, hearing aid cleaning and service by appointment. Call in advance to schedule a 20 minute appointment.
“ROTTEN” DOCUSERIES
On Tuesdays at 11 a.m., join us as we view the series “Rotten.” This docuseries travels deep into the heart of the food supply chain to reveal unsavory truths and expose the hidden forces that shape what we eat. Sign up in advance and we’ll save you a seat.
PODIATRY CLINIC
Dr. Kelly McLaughlin is offering a Podiatry Clinic for Podiatric Foot Care and Screening at the senior center on the 1st Friday of every month from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The next clinic will be held on Friday, Oct. 7. The cost for each 15 minute appointment is $30. Please sign up and pay for your appointment in advance.
SEPTEMBER MOVIE DAYS
The theme for our September movies at the senior center is “Brand New Netflix Movies.” The following movies will be shown on Thursdays at 1 p.m.:
Sept. 22 – “Umma” - Living a quiet life on a farm with her daughter, a woman (Sandra Oh) must confront her past when the remains of her estranged mother arrive from South Korea.
Sept. 29 – “Persuasion” – Eight years after Ann Elliot (Dakota Johnson) was persuaded not to marry a dashing man of humble origins, they meet again. Will she seize her second chance at true love.

1 ON 1 TECH SUPPORT
Join us on Monday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for our 1 On 1 Tech Support Program. During your 1 on 1 individualized tech support appointment, you will be able to get answers relating to phones, tablets or computers. Examples include troubleshooting, setting up a device, and other “how to” questions. Call us to set up an appointment.
VANGO DISCOVERY CLUB
The VanGo Discovery Club is traveling once again on Wednesdays. On our travel days we leave from the park at Booth Playground (80 South Street) at 10:15 a.m. and return to Foxborough by 4:30(ish). Registrants travel using the VanGo for an independent, self-guided exploration for 3 to 4 hours. The cost is $7 per person and must be paid at the time you sign up. The following Discovery Club trips have been scheduled on the following dates: Sept. 21 to Falmouth Center; Oct. 5 to Legacy Place, and; Oct. 19 Mystery Trip. Seats are limited, and you must sign up with your payment in advance.
THEATER WORKSHOPS
Starting on Wednesday, Sept. 7 and continuing every Wednesday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., our Theater Workshops will begin once again. Learn character portrayal by reading scripts (mostly comedy). This fun workshop is led by Evie Rayburg and Jeanne Bonneau, and does NOT require memorization, costumes or production. Please sign up in advance.
WE’VE ADDED A 2ND FOLIAGE TURKEY TRAIN DATE
Due to popular demand, we have added an additional day trip to Meredith, NH. This added Turkey Train day trip has been scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 25. We’ll be leaving Foxboro at 9 a.m. from St. Mary’s Parking Lot at 58 Carpenter Street. In Meredith, we’ll board the Winnepesaukee “Turkey Train” at the Hobo Railroad. This 2-hour scenic train ride through the countryside of NH is complete with a delicious full turkey dinner complete with all the fixin’s! This exceptional turkey meal is provided by Hart’s Turkey Farm. Following the lunch train excursion, we board the motorcoach and head to Moulton Farms, in the heart of the Lakes Region. The farm dates back to the 1890’s, and you can browse their farm stand & garden center or you can pick up a treat at their bakery. The cost is $120 for Foxboro residents and $125 for non-residents. Registration with payment has begun. Join us for a fun day out, and enjoy some of our fall foliage.
EARLY BEGINNER MAH JONGG
Every Friday at 9 a.m., there is an Early Beginner Mah Jongg program at the senior center. This early beginner Mah Jongg free play group is for players who have only just recently started learning and may want to take each game a little slower than those who have played Mah Jongg for many years. Sign up and let us know you’ll be joining us.
SENIOR SANDWICHES
On Thursdays, we offer Grab and Go Senior Sandwiches at the senior center. You can pick up your sandwich at the front desk on Thursdays at any time between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and you can take the sandwich with you, or you are welcome to eat in the Coffee Room or on the outside benches. Quantities are limited, so you MUST sign up in advance to get your Senior Sandwich meal. There is a suggested donation of $3 to HESSCO.
BRIDGE LESSONS
Bridge is a card game that is played all over the world, in person and online. If you’ve always wanted to learn how to play Bridge, this is your opportunity. The classes are held on Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunil Trivedi is the instructor and he will introduce new and interested players to the game. Please sign up in advance.
MAH JONGG FREE PLAY
Mah Jongg Free Play meets every Wednesday from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Sign up in advance if you’d like to join us.
CHAIR YOGA
Chair Yoga classes are held at the senior center every Monday morning at 9:15 a.m. under the direction of Michelle Lawlor of the YMCA. Yoga is a gentle form of yoga that can be done while sitting in a chair or while standing and using the chair for support. The cost for this class is $3 and is punch card eligible. Due to limited space, you must call in advance to register for the class.
ZUMBA GOLD
Zumba is a fitness program inspired by Latin Dance. Zumba combines Latin rhythms with cardiovascular exercise to create an aerobic tine that is fun and easy to follow. Join us on Tuesday mornings at 9:45 a.m. The cost is $3 per class and is punch card eligible. Space is limited, so please call in advance to sign up for each class.
SCRABBLE GROUP
Do you enjoy playing a game of Scrabble or would you like to learn how to play? We have a Scrabble group that meets on Monday afternoons at 1 p.m. at the senior center. Challenge your mind, enjoy some time with friends and have lots of fun. If you’re interested in playing, call us to sign up.
TABLE TOP GARDEN CLUB
The senior center Table Top Garden Club meets every Tuesday, at 10:45 a.m. at the senior center. Starting on Tuesday, Sept. 6 the Table Top Garden Club will begin meeting at 10:45 a.m. Under the direction of Marsha Lewicke, this club explores gardening techniques, tends our outdoor raised garden beds, and has group discussions regarding different varieties of plant life. No previous gardening experience is necessary. Call us to sign up.
STRENGTH TRAINING
Our Strength Training classes are held every Wednesday morning at 8:45 a.m. Each week this program features stretching routines and exercises that focus on the core, legs, arms and shoulders. The cost is $3 per class and is punch card eligible.
SENIOR FITNESS
Join is for our Senior Fitness classes on Friday mornings at 8:45 a.m. This class uses stretching, aerobics and hand-held weights, to focus on exercising the body from the neck to the ankles. Senior Fitness is designed for all levels of fitness. The cost is $3 per class and is punch card eligible.
KNITTING
Our knitting group meets at 1 p.m. at the senior center every Monday afternoon. This group loves to gather and chat, knit, and even do some crocheting, if you so choose. Everyone is welcome to attend, just bring your knitting project to work on. Please sign up in advance.
