Foxborough Designated as Class 1 CommunityRELEASE DATE:  12/18/2020

FOXBOROUGH FIRE & RESCUE
DESIGNATED A CLASS 1 COMMUNITY

Foxborough, MA — The Foxborough Fire & Rescue Department is proud to announce our designation as a Class 1 Community by the Insurance Service Office, the highest possible rating for a municipality.

The Insurance Service Office, ISO, rates communities and their fire departments by risk level between 1 and 10, with 1 being the highest designation available. Insurance companies use the ISO designation to assess insurance premium rates for homeowners and businesses. A Class 1 designation equates to lower insurance premiums for our residents and business owners depending on their respective insurance carriers. Foxborough was previously designated a Class 4 community which was received in 2004. With this new designation homeowners and business owners could possibly see a 5-7% drop in insurance premiums. This endeavor was truly a team effort on behalf of the Foxborough Department of Public Works, Southeastern Mass 911 District and Foxborough Fire & Rescue.

The ISO ratings are primarily based on:
o Water supply system, including the volume of water available and the distribution of and maintenance of fire hydrants
o Fire department training, equipment, apparatus and operations
o Community risk-reduction efforts, including public education and fire-prevention programs
o Emergency communications, including 9-1-1 dispatch

Of the 47,000 communities covered by the ISO in the country, there are 388 Class 1 Fire Departments nationally and Foxborough is only the 7th Department in Massachusetts. Foxborough is the smallest department in Massachusetts with a Class 1 rating and the only one that provides fire-based emergency medical services.

Chief of Department, Michael Kelleher, is proud of the department’s continual efforts to improve fire services for Foxborough residents and visitors. The investment given by taxpayers to the water system, 911 system and fire department has been recognized by this increase in our ISO class rating. Most importantly, a Class 1 rating tells members of the Foxborough Fire Department that their contributions and dedication to service and training are recognized and valued. It should be a source of pride for the men and women of our department and the community as a whole.
